Useful Software

You will need a program that will allow you to obtain part of a webpage as a picture for inclusion in reports. Please realize that if you already have such a program you should feel free to use it.

 

A. A free Office Suite  "Open Office" (contains Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Paint type programs)

 

 

B. A free browser called "Avant"

            The browser has a built in picture making tool. Under "File" select "Save Selected Region as Picture"

 .

C. The Vista “Snipping Tool”

  1. Find "Snipping Tool" provided with Vista. Which is found in "Programs" - "Accessories" OR download "Vista-Snipping Tool" by clicking on the icon. Save "Snipping Tool" to desktop. I also drag the "Vista-Snipping Tool" to the "Task Bar" (bottom of screen) for easy access to my programs.

  2. Identify the picture or area of computer screen you want to copy.
  3. Run the "Vista-Snipping Tool" by clicking the icon
  4. Draw around area desired.
  5. Under "Edit command select" "Copy" or right click on the area selected and copy.
  6. Paste image into document.
  7. Right click on the picture, to make active. From the pop-up menu chose "Format Picture", "Layout" then "Square". This will allow you to move the picture within the document.

D. Steps for Using the XP “Snipping Tool” 

    1.      Download "XP-Snipping Tool" to your computer by clicking on the icon. Save "Snipping Tool"
           to desktop. I also drag the  "XP-Snipping Tool" to the "Task Bar (bottom of screen)" for easy
           access to my programs.

2.      Identify the picture or area of computer screen you want to copy.

3.      Run the "XP-Snipping Tool" by double clicking the icon

4.      Draw around area desired. Select larger area than needed.

5.      Right click on the area selected and copy.

6.      Paste image into document.

7.      Right click on the picture, to make active. From the pop-up menu chose "Format Picture", "Layout" then "Square". This will allow you to move the picture within the document.

8.      Select picture, in document, by right clicking on it and select Select "Show Picture Toolbar".

9.      Select "Cropping", on the picture toolbar, and crop your picture to the correct size and information.

 

 

E. Steps for Using “Snippy” for XP 

  1. Download "Snippy" to your computer by clicking on the icon. Save "Snippy" to desktop.

  2. Click on "Snippy.exe" to start "Snippy". Notice the scissors will appear in the taskbar with all the other running programs.
  3. Identify the picture or area of computer screen you want to copy.
  4. Click on the scissors, "Snippy", in the taskbar to run the application.
  5. While holding down the "shift" key draw around area desired to select the picture you want.
  6. Paste picture into document.
  7. Right clicking on the picture, to make active. From the pop-up menu chose "Format Picture", "Layout" then "Square". This will allow you to move the picture within the document.

 

F. Apple Macintosh (According to references - not tested)

1.  Apple-Shift-3 takes a screenshot of the whole screen.

2. Apple-Shift-4 produces crosshairs that can be dragged to grab just a portion of the screen.

3. OS X also comes with the Grab utility, with which you can grab a selection, a window, the screen,
    or a timed screenshot.
