Assignment

1. 

Submit an autobiography to the Discussion Board. Include: educational background, major, hobbies, occupation, family, and anything else you might think    interesting.  Include how many online courses you have taken in the past or are currently enrolled in.   Please respond to several of your fellow classmate’s autobiography and welcome them to the class.

Sign and Submit the Student Statement of Responsibility.   After you have submitted this to turnitin.com you will recieve your ENVS 1050 student number by e-mail.

Place a copy of IrfanView on your computer. http://www.sciencescene.com/EnvironmentalScience/usefulsoftware/usefulso.htm or (Go to http://ScienceScene.com -> Science Course Support-> Environmental Science-> Useful Software. Download directions for installation and use. Download and install IrfanView). Practice snapping pictures on your computer. VISTA and WINDOWS 7 users do not need to download this software.  VISTA and Windows 7 users can use the Snipping Tool located in the Accessories menu. Mac users can download a free tool from http://skitch.com/ or http://www.techsmith.com/jing/ .

Objectives/Guide Questions (Click To Select)  Read the Objectives/Guide Questions. Make a personal learning checklist out of them so it can guide your learning on this seminar.  Answers to these questions can be used during the quiz.

Read the lecture and the Reading Assignment to specifically obtain the skills indicated in the objectives. Extra credit assignments are sometimes located in the lecture.

For each of the Objectives/Guide Questions (link provided above) develop a very detailed answer, description or explanation to help you study for the quiz. Former students have said that the study guide website  provided by the text book is very helpful also.  It is suggested you take a look to see if their study aids will be of assistance to you.  (The answers to these questions are not submitted.  These are strictly to guide your studies.)  Take the quiz before Day 7 11:30pm in Angel.  It will be available after midnight Day 6It is multiple choice.  There are 20 questions.  There are about 30 minutes to take the quiz. Each student will take a unique computer generated quiz. You may use your textbook, answers to Discussion Questions, and answers to the Objective Guide Questions when taking the quiz.  Make sure you take the time to answer all the objective guide questions before you take the quiz.  Students who accomplish this do very well on the quizzes.  Students who don't, usually wish they had.

Discussion Questions (Click To Select) Respond, in writing, to the discussion question based upon the assigned readings and your personal experiences. Submit one question and your response (written in your own words) to the Discussion Board (DB) before day 2 (midnight)  of the week. Post the question that corresponds to your student ID number (assigned by the instructor).  The discussion questions provide the opportunity to grow and build ideas and concepts based upon an interaction with other students and myself. They also prepare students for the quizzes.  Remember you are part of a learning community and it is your responsibility to interact with your fellow classmates both presenting and challenging ideas.  Also, use these questions as a study guide for the quizzes. 

6. Application Project (submit to www.turnitin.com before midnight of Day 6)
a. Science Technology and the Environment Article  (ClickToSelect)

Read the application, perform the indicated application(s) and submit it to www.turnitin.com (use the Science, Technology, and the Environment link provided above). Please use the Discussion Board to discuss any concerns or problems you encounter while working on the Application Project. As part of a learning community it is your responsibility to help and support you fellow classmates.  This section is worth 30 points each week.

                   For each application include: 

a.

The activity or data sheet provided.

b.

Summary of the application project.

Web Resources/Article (Click To Select)  Select one web site of your choice, from the ones provided at the Web Resources link.  (use the Web Resources link given above).    This section is worth 15 points each week.  An example has been provided in the Discussion Board.  (submit to www.turnitin.com before midnight of Day 3)    To view example web article project go to the Questions and Answers Discussion Board under the Lessons Tab in Angel.  For the web site:  

a.

Include a picture of each web site using IrfanView or your snipping tool. Include the URL (web address) and a portion of the page.  Do not copy the entire page.  Be sure that the URL (web address) is easily read.

b.

Describe the contents the site in your own words.

c.

Quote   two facts and two opinions whose concepts are presented in the seminar.  Each fact and each opinion quoted, should only contain one sentence. Provide an explanation of each quote or provide some background about the quote.  Do NOT describe links to other sites.  Select a link and read the associated article.

8. Submit a Final Thoughts posting to the Discussion Board before Day 7 midnight.  This section draws together your thoughts, based upon the work of this seminar,  feelings, about the content of the seminar, and how this seminar relates to your life.   This section is worth 2 points to be added to the total participation tally.  Your final thoughts must be a substantive post to receive credit.  To simply say you learned a lot, the seminar was fun, or to complain about the class or life, will not earn points.

Prepare your Application Projects (submit before Day 6 (Saturday) midnight) and Web Articles (submit before day 3 (Wednesday) midnight) in MS Word, version 97 or later, and submit  to http://www.turnitin.com .,   If you do not already have an account with Turn It In you will need to establish one.   Go to the website and select Create an Account in the upper right corner of the page.   You will need the following information:
