Title:
Solid Waste Analysis

READ THIS: This assignment requires research. If you don't want to spend the time with research then you will need to select the Crustal Resources application where most of the          research has been completed for you.

1.   For five days, keep a list of the solid waste you throw away. At the end of the five days classify the solid waste as one of the following - recycled, reused, burned, or done without by placing an X in the box. This represents what could be done with the waste. Counting each X as one determine the grand total of the items (name) and the totals of each category of solid waste disposed in five days. A single item can have multiple x's associated with it.  Determine the percentage of the materials that could be recycled, reused, burned for energy, or done without.  In your summary compare your numbers with the percentages given in your textbook.

2. What happens to solid waste in your community? You will need to contact the landfill for this info or your city's Department of Public Works (DPW). If your DPW doesn't have the info for you they should be able to direct you.  www.michigan.gov/deq and http://www.epa.gov/enviro/ may also be helpful .  Beware.....the landfill people are not always very nice.  For each answer provide your source of information.  (All the information you are requesting is considered public information.  It is not classified.)

a.  How much solid waste is placed in landfills?

1) What technology is used in local landfills and incinerators?

2) What leakage and pollution problems have local landfills had?

b.  How much solid waste is incinerated?

c.  How much solid waste is composted?

d.  How much solid waste is recycled?

e.  Does your community have a recycling program?

1) Does your community sells soft drinks in throwaway cans or bottles?

2) Is the recycling program voluntary or mandatory?

3) Does the recycling program have: curbside collection; Drop-off centers; Buy-back centers

f.   What hazardous wastes are produced in your community?  http://www.epa.gov/enviro/ Enter your zip code in QUICK SEARCH.  Scroll down to the section titled  WASTE > Facilities that have reported hazardous waste activities XX, then click on the number (XX).  The site does not tell you what happens to the wastes or answer questions 2-6.

1) How many facilities produce hazardous wastes?  What happens to these wastes?

2) Are there any active or abandoned hazardous waste dumps in your community?

3) What has been dumped there?

4) Do they have one or more liners?

5) Has there been testing to determine whether wastes have leaked from the sites?

6) If so, what were the results of the tests?

g.  What are Household Hazardous Wastes (list them)?  Contact the Health Department for your county (or go to their website) to find out how residents are to dispose of these wastes.

1)What are the drop off dates and the locations where these wastes are to be taken in your county?

2)What items are they willing to take?  What are you supposed to do with the items they won't take?

    3) Have you had HHW that needed to be disposed of in your home?  How was it disposed of?  Will you dispose of it properly now?  If no, why not?

    4) Why isn't it acceptable to place HHW in landfills?

h.  Is unnecessary packaging used in your community?

Visit a store in your community and make a list of items that have unnecessary packaging (a plastic or glass bottle encased in a paper box or three wood screws packaged in large plastic blister pack, etc...).

Don't forget the summary of this application.
