Topic Seminar

What size clothes should I buy for spring? How much paint will I need for the house? How many gallons of gasoline will we need for our trip? Each of these questions is based upon the concept of measurement. Measurement is like baseball, football or soccer in that it is nothing more than an arbitrary set of rules that we must learn to use in order to be successful. Using agreed upon measurement procedures allows us to be confident that when we buy a 2-liter bottle of soda pop it really contains 2-liters of soda pop. Ready? Let’s see if we can “measure-up”.
1.  The topic measurement is meant primarily as a review of the skills used in measuring things. Please attempt all the examples in your textbook and note that the answers for them are provided.
2.  Remember, if you have difficulty, that you are part of a learning community. Submit a note to the virtual classroom "Discussion Board" and I am sure you will receive a prompt response from a fellow student or your instructor. I also hope that you will help fellow students when you are able. (Remember a portion of your grade is based upon your participation)
3.  I have found that students have difficulty with the application of the Measurement Rule.  For a very good example of the Measurement Rule, (click the underlined hot-link). Be diligent in its application. Remember to first look at the measuring device to determine the smallest marking, then go one place value smaller. Students come to understand the rule quickly, but forget to apply it consistently.
Topic Objective
Demonstrate understanding of the Measurement topic by mastering the topic objectives, conducting an experiment, applying learning outcomes to related research, stating the relevancy of at least two topic concepts in a written topic report.
Assignment
1.  Read the topic in your textbook.
2.  Write the Procedure Section of the topic report. The procedure section of the topic report is a summary of what is going to be done for this report. There should be one paragraph for each “part” of the investigation (laboratory). Each paragraph should discuss what is to be done and how it is to be done.
3.  The Data section of your report.  The Data Section contains the data obtained from the laboratory investigations. The data is presented using the electronic data sheets obtained from the web site. Post any questions you have to the Discussion Board.
4.  Write the Outcomes section of the topic report. The Outcomes section of the topic report presents the specific outcomes for each part of the laboratory activities with respect to the research questions. There should be one paragraph for each “part” of the investigation (laboratory).
5.  Write the Application section of the topic report. The application section of each seminar identifies an activity or activities that involved the web.

Each application includes: 1)A picture that identifies the web site. The picture must include URL and Part of Page as ONE Picture. 2) A description the contents of the web site or activity. 3) An indication on how the web site applies to the topic.

a.  Since you have worked so hard I think you need a vacation. Go to the Physical Science home page and go to the Virtual Science Museums (click on the Hot-Link provided).
  • Select a museum anywhere in the world and visit it.

  • While touring the museum look for anything pertaining to Measurement.

b.  Visit the following site and run the very interesting demo to better understand the Metric System (click on the Hot-Link provided).

Prospective on the Metric System - Powers of 10

  • Use IrfanView to obtain a “picture” to indicate the web site that was selected.

  • Include the URL, location or address and part of the web site in your picture.

  • Write a summary that describes the web site and indicated how it applies to the topic

6.  The Relevancy section of your topic report:
     a. Identifies and lists a minimum of two concepts presented in this topic.
     b. Discusses and relates each concept to your life.
7.  Write the "Summary" section of your report. The Summary section summarizes the work of the topic. This should include a broad statement of outcome of the the topic, thoughts, based upon the work of this topic including feelings about the content of the topic and how the topic relates to your life.  Also, post this section of your report to the Discussion Board.
8.  Determine if you have mastered the topic objectives of the topic by taking to quiz in your textbook. Evaluate your answers using answer key in the text book. Take the quiz, for the topic, located at our web site and included with the seminar.
    a. Answers, for the quiz, posted at the web site, quiz, will not be provided. Discuss any of the quiz questions that you have difficulty with or are uncertain of  with your colleagues in the Discussion Board.
    b. Add your quiz answers to your topic report in the format:
                                             Quiz Answers: 1-A, 2-C, 3-A, 4-B, 5-D . . . . and so-forth.
9.  After completing your topic report, in MS Word, save it on your hard drive so that you have a permanent record and  can attach the report to your email.
10.  Online students submit your topic report to your instructor before 12:00 midnight Friday to the Email address assigned by your instructor.
11.  Return all equipment to its original package. Make sure that the materials are neat and clean, ready for the next student. Remember part of your grade is dependent upon proper handling of the equipment.

Remember:

Send any material to be graded to: The Email address assigned by your instructor. Send questions to your instructor to: The Email address assigned by your instructor. Assignments will follow the syllabus. It is my policy to review your notes each day. Your grade will be posted each week. Your reports will be graded each Saturday.
