Motion Part A2 Flowing Water
All you are really doing
is measuring the time it takes to fill the beaker. But, you are doing it in
increments. You first run the water at a constant flow (slow), put the beaker
under the water at the same time you turn on the stop watch. When the water
hits the approximately the 1/4 marks pull the beaker out of the water and stop
the stop watch. This is the time for trial 1. Leave the water running and reset the stop
watch. Measure the water level of the top of the water in the beaker. This is
your distance reading for trial 1 (x1).
Put the beaker back
under the water at the same time start the stop watch again. When the beaker
hits about 1/2 full, pull out the beaker and stop the stop watch. Measure the distance
from the bottom of the beaker to the top of the water in the beaker to obtain
the distance for trail 2 (x2).
Put the beaker back under the water at the
same time start the stop watch again. When the beaker hits about 3/4 full, pull
out the beaker and stop the stop watch. Measure the distance from the bottom of
the beaker to the top of the water in the beaker to obtain the distance for
trail 3 (x3).
Subtract your starting
point of 0 from your first distance reading x1. Then divide this distance by
the time taken to go that distance to obtain the speed of the water for trial 1.
Subtract your distance reading
x1 from reading x2. Divide this distance by the time taken to go that distance
to obtain the speed of the water for trial 2.
Subtract distance reading
x2 from x3 to obtain the distance for trial 3. Divide this distance by the time
taken to go that distance to obtain the speed of the water for trial 2.
After obtaining the speeds for trials one, two and three obtain their average.
